Happy Pride Month - 4 Ways To Celebrate Yourself

Gay Pride 2020

Happy Pride everyone!

Now more than ever we should all take the time to celebrate how far we have come and at the same time know that there is so much more progression and work to be done. Pride reminds us to take the time to acknowledge that our diversity and our way of being should be celebrated.

In these challenging times, maybe due to external forces that are out of your control, you may find that it makes it challenging to take the time to celebrate yourself. Those who are not allies of the LGBQIA+ community may make hurtful comments. Some of these comments may be overtly hurtful or hateful and some may be a symptom of implicit bias, still a hurtful comment without them being aware of it. Endorsing commentary that you are not equal can lead to feelings of invalidation, sadness, and even hopelessness. If you take anything away from this short blog, just know you are an amazing, wonderful person, and your diversity needs to be celebrated!

I would love to share with you some ways that you can celebrate yourself while giving yourself a boost to your mental health. Here are 4 actions you can take right now!

1. Look inward to be grounded.

What are some unique qualities that you are grateful for? Take a mental note or jot down fun aspects of your personality, that make you, you. What would friends or family members say about you that they appreciate you?

2. Lead by example by providing support.

Show others the warmth, love, and empathy that you provide and it’s okay to do this publicly! Showing others that you are caring, compassionate, and  loving translates and can be felt by those whose paths you cross. Be Respectful

Choose your words wisely! Never make jokes at the expense of someone else whether they are in the LGBQ community or not. Eliminate discriminating words from your vocabulary and make an effort to understand and respect others.

3. Engage in your favorite self-care activity.

How do you decompress? Do you enjoy a long bubble bath while reading your latest book? Or maybe you want to cuddle with someone or your pet on the couch while listening to music. Take a hike along your favorite path or treat yourself out to dinner. Be creative!

4. Watch one of your favorite LGBTQIA+ themed movies with friends who are in your social bubble or on zoom!

If you are a pride parade attendee and bummed that it has been either postponed or cancelled because of Covid-19, fear not! By getting together and watching a movie that celebrates pride with others you are not only supporting Pride Month, you’re forming memories and reinforcing bonds with those close to you.
